Piantarella sits on the southeastern tip of Corsica, facing the Strait of Bonifacio — the narrow channel separating the island from Sardinia. The lagoon here is flat and shallow, anchored by a sandbar that holds chop down even when the wind is building. It is a proper kite lagoon: the kind that rewards a measured approach with smooth water and reliable afternoon thermals. The old town of Bonifacio is a short drive north, a fortress city balanced on white limestone cliffs above the strait. The beach at Piantarella is accessible by road south of town, with parking at the beach — arrive early in summer, because it fills up. The launch is a flat sandy beach on the lagoon edge. The shallow sandbar is forgiving for water starts and makes self-rescue manageable across most of the riding area. Tide affects both beach width and usable shallow water, so check conditions before rigging. Wind at Piantarella runs on two main patterns. The Levante — an easterly to east-northeasterly — blows onshore from the strait and sits within the usable wind window of 10° to 190°. It is the wind you want. Thermal activity typically builds through the afternoon as the land heats up, with the breeze shifting toward the NE and strengthening — sessions from late morning onward often see the best pressure. The wind to watch is westerly or northwesterly. These blow offshore, are gusty, and fall outside the safe kiting arc. A set downwind from here puts you into the Strait of Bonifacio. That is not a recoverable situation. If the forecast shows W or NW, the kite stays packed. On the water, the flat lagoon suits freeride and freestyle. Low chop and a shallow, forgiving floor make this a natural fit for intermediates building skills and beginners working with instructors. The afternoon thermal build can make things livelier, so if you are newer to the sport, an earlier session before the thermal fills in gives you calmer conditions. Facilities are within reach. Bonifacio Windsurf and Corsica Kite School are both within about 250 metres of the launch — good for lessons, gear hire, or a local read on the day. Buvette de piantarella and Le Ponton are about 400 metres away for food and drinks. Camping des Iles is around 1.3km for those staying close to the water, and I tre Casi is just under a kilometre. Hôtel 4 étoiles Les Suites Du Maquis sits about 4.6km away for those wanting hotel comfort. Piantarella draws a crowd in peak season. The flat water, nearby schools, and the appeal of Bonifacio's old town combine to make it popular through the summer months. An early start before the kite schools run their morning sessions gives you more space on the water.
