Porto Pollo — locally known by both names, Porto Pollo and Porto Liscia — sits on a narrow isthmus on Sardinia's northern coast, pinched between two bays with the Strait of Bonifacio close to the north. That geography is the whole story: the strait acts as a funnel, amplifying the NW Maestrale as it rolls in, and the isthmus puts you in position to pick your bay depending on how the wind arrives. Riders who know northern Sardinia treat this place as the benchmark — somewhere you measure other spots against. The approach follows the coastal road toward the peninsula; the spot is well-signed and parking near the beach is generally straightforward on quieter days. Two distinct bays face roughly opposite directions, giving the isthmus its flexibility: shift sides as the wind swings and you typically find a clean cross-onshore angle on one of them. That versatility, combined with the Maestrale's reliability, is why Porto Pollo fills up fast when a NW forecast comes in. The Maestrale arrives here as a textbook kite wind — the Strait of Bonifacio venturi-boosts it, so what looks like a moderate NW reading can feel noticeably more powered-up on the water. Expect steady pressure rather than gusty lurches when it's fully established, but the first hour of a new Maestrale cycle can be patchy; give it time to settle before you upsize. The one direction that doesn't work here is SE — the bays lose their shelter geometry and the chop becomes confused. If the forecast shows anything from the southeast quadrant, save this spot for another day. Water character varies by bay. In lighter air the inside waters can be flat — useful for footwork and progressive riding. When the Maestrale builds, short-period chop develops quickly; rarely massive, but enough to keep you honest on landings. Skill range is wide. The flatter pockets suit intermediates building mileage, while the open reaches beyond the bay mouths work well for experienced riders chasing the Maestrale at full strength. Watch for swimmers and SUPs near the launch — this is a multi-use beach and it shows on busy days. The facility spread is solid: MB Pro Center is close to the water, and Isola dei Gabbiani Beach Bar and Bar Isola dei Gabbiani cover the post-session drink. For a sit-down meal there's Da Sergio, Il Maestrale, and Isola dei gabbiano. Hotel Le Dune handles accommodation if you're staying more than a day. Café Porto Pollo, Lacala calà beach bar, and Octopussy fill out the rest. One honest note: Porto Pollo's benchmark status means it draws kiteboarders, windsurfers, and SUP riders together in volume. Popular Maestrale days can get tight in the launch zone — arrive early, walk the beach before you rig, and give windsurf rigs more clearance than you think they need.
