La Tonnara sits tucked into a west-facing rocky bay just west of Bonifacio, in the southern tip of Corsica — part of the Réserve Naturelle des Bouches de Bonifacio. A handful of low, rocky uninhabited islets — the Îlots de la Tonnara — sit around a hundred metres offshore, breaking the swell and defining the kite zone. The Genoese tower at the harbour entrance is your landmark on the approach. Getting here means a short drive down a dirt track through low scrub. A large sandy car park sits directly in front of the beach, right beside Chez Marco restaurant — arrive early in peak summer, it fills fast. The main launch is to the left of the small harbour, in front of Chez Marco and adjacent to the A Casa Glisse kite school. With W/NW wind blowing, start as far upwind as you can — ideally at school level — because the wind will push you toward the rocks under the Genoese stone turret quickly. In strong westerlies, walk all the way to the southern point of the beach before going in: downwind there is barely any room before you are on the rocks. There is also a secondary sheltered launch in a cove to the south, reached through a narrow channel between rocks — tight, but useful in certain conditions. The islets break the swell, so the area immediately behind them can seem surprisingly calm — but do not be fooled. Submerged reefs sit just centimetres below the surface around the islets, and a rocky shoal upwind of the main entrance channel breaks even in moderate westerlies. Buoys mark the channel; follow them on the way out and treat them as gospel on the return. When the Mistral or a westerly fills in, La Tonnara turns into a wave spot. Punchy waves form outside the islet line, and riding them with rocks in play is the kind of challenge that separates experience levels quickly. With an easterly, the spot flips to offshore flat water — technically appealing for freestyle or slalom, but genuinely dangerous to ride alone. Best season runs October through April, when westerlies are consistent. Summer brings lighter wind and heavier tourist traffic. Skill level is expert. Rocks are everywhere — on the bottom, at both ends of the beach, and just centimetres below the surface near the islets. You need a solid upwind game and good judgment about kite zones. A Casa Glisse and the itinerant Corsica Kiteboarding both offer boat-based sessions, putting you in the water past the hazardous shallows — for anyone short of expert level, a boat session is the sensible entry point. Chez Marco and Le Goéland Beach cover your post-session food and drink. Water shoes are not optional — sea urchins on the rocky bottom have a way of making the point.
