About Batumi Beach

Batumi sits on Georgia's eastern Black Sea coast in the subtropical Adjara region, with the Caucasus mountains rising steeply behind the city. The kite spot is the main city beach — a pebble strand running along the seafront boulevard through the heart of this port and resort town. It's an unusual setup: hotel towers and a busy promenade on your back, open sea to the west, and a dramatic mountain backdrop that makes this one of the more visually striking places to fly a kite on the Black Sea. Getting here is straightforward. Batumi has airport connections and the beach runs right along the waterfront — no long drive down a rough track. Parking exists along the seafront boulevard though it fills up through peak summer. The launch is the city beach itself, pebble rather than sand. Firmer underfoot for rigging and setup, but watch yourself if you end up bodydragging — the stones are unforgiving compared to sand, so booties or old shoes are worth throwing in your bag. The beach is shared with swimmers and sunseekers through the summer months. Launching early in the morning, before foot traffic builds, gives you considerably more room to work with and keeps things simpler for everyone. Kite schools operate on the beach, and speaking with them before you set up is a smart move — they know the current layout of swimming zones, any local protocol, and what the wind has been doing that week. Wind is a westerly sea breeze that builds through the afternoon from June to September. The usable window runs 180°–359°, a southerly to northerly arc that aligns well with the sea breeze direction. Conditions typically sit in the 10–18 knot range — workable for freeriding and progression, though riders chasing consistently powered conditions may find it on the lighter side. Water runs flat to choppy; this is a freeride and learning destination rather than a wave spot, and the conditions suit intermediates and those still building skills. For food close to the water, At the sisters and Cafe Adjara Old House RestoBar are within 400 metres. Friendship and Heart of Batumi are within 650 metres for post-session drinks. Accommodation is well-covered: Back2ME and Jeal Apartments are under 500 metres from the beach; Hostel in Batumi, Karvi Hostel, and Hostel 47 are all within about 1.3 km. Being a city beach, Batumi has the full range of options beyond the immediate vicinity. Season runs June through September, with July and August typically offering the most reliable afternoon sea breeze. Outside this window, wind consistency drops and Black Sea conditions can deteriorate. Time a kite-specific trip around midsummer and you should find rideable conditions building most afternoons.
