About Aegiali Bay (Amorgos)

Amorgos sits at the far eastern edge of the Cyclades, and Aegiali Bay is cut into the island's northern coast — a deep, sheltered inlet that opens directly into the Meltemi flow from the northwest and north. The bay faces true north, which means the seasonal wind arrives onshore and fills the bay reliably through the summer months. Reaching Aegiali from the island's main port at Katapola involves crossing Amorgos on a winding mountain road — scenic, but allow time for the drive. Aegiali also has its own small ferry terminal with connections to Piraeus and the island-hop network, so arriving by sea directly into the village is a straightforward alternative. In July and August the village gets busier, but it's small enough that it never tips into resort-town territory. The launch is off a long sandy beach running along the base of the bay. The water close to shore is crystal clear and stays shallow for the first stretch, giving you room to lay lines out and get your gear sorted without immediately standing in deep water. There's shade from trees along the beach — a practical detail when you're rigging under full Greek summer sun. This is a clean, organised launch with no complicated entry points. Beyond the shallows, the water deepens and the Meltemi makes its presence felt. The chop is real and consistent when the wind is running — short, steep windchop typical of an onshore bay in the Cyclades. This is not a flat-water or lagoon setup. Riders who enjoy powered sessions in technical chop will feel at home; anyone expecting glassy conditions should adjust expectations. The Meltemi season runs June through September, typically delivering 15–25 knots from the NW-N direction. Wind is onshore, which makes for an easy launch but puts the beach directly downwind. Know your upwind ability before committing to a long session. A kite school operates in Aegiali village, giving intermediates a source of local conditions knowledge and beginners a starting point before heading out alone. The Amorgos Diving Center has run on the beach since 2007, reflecting the quality of the water and the consistent visitor demand for water sports at this bay. Off the water, the beachfront promenade connects you to beach clubs, taverns, bars, and cafes within a short walk.
