About Glyfada (Naxos)

Glyfada sits on the southwest coast of Naxos, south of Kastraki and Mikri Vigla. It's a preserved natural beach — white sand, turquoise Aegean water, and virtually no crowds. That combination is already rare in the Cyclades; add one of the most consistent Meltemi setups in the region and you've got something genuinely worth making a trip for. The wind is the whole point. The North/North-Northeast Meltemi arrives side-shore and runs for more than 250 days a year, typically at 18–25 knots. June through September is the season, with July and August delivering the most consistent pressure and the most reliable daily pattern. Outside those months the wind frequency drops and the beach quietens. There is no kite school or rental operation at Glyfada — this is a self-sufficient spot. Arrive with your gear checked and ready, and know the beach before you launch. Mikri Vigla, a short distance north along the coast, covers the support side: if you need instruction, a lesson refresher before committing to Glyfada, or a rescue-equipped base nearby, that's where to go. Amouditis Kitesurfing Center Naxos and Naxos Kitesurf Club both operate in the area. Launch is from the sand. The side-shore Meltemi puts you immediately into a cross-shore run, and upwind ability is the non-negotiable skill here — not because conditions are extreme, but because if you can't work back to your launch point, you're facing a long coastal walk. This is the reason Glyfada sits at intermediate level. Know your exit before you go in, and keep an eye on how the wind sits relative to the beach throughout your session. The sandy beach gives you space to rig and handle the kite without drama, but there's no on-site support if things go sideways. The water is open Aegean: the turquoise colour is genuine, the beach stays uncrowded, and the natural, largely undeveloped shoreline keeps the atmosphere clean and quiet. For food and a drink after the session, Blue Lagoon, Glyfada restaurant, and Nomad Beach Bar Restaurant Naxos are in the area. Accommodation ranges from Naxos Camping and Naxos Hostel at the budget end, through to Glyfada Beach Studios, Glyfada Naxos Studios & Apartments, and Maragas Beach Naxos for something closer to the water. Show up prepared — own gear, upwind game sorted, session plan clear — and Glyfada delivers. The Meltemi tends to show up too; over 250 days a year, it's been consistent practice.
