About Kontari (Chios)

Kontari sits on the east coast of Chios, roughly 3 kilometres south of Chios Town and close to Chios Airport, facing across the narrow channel toward the Turkish coastline. It's a shallow, sandy bay that has become the go-to kite and windsurf beach on the island, and once you've ridden here you'll understand why it fits naturally into the North Aegean island circuit alongside Lesbos and Lemnos. Getting there is straightforward — the beach is a short drive south of town along the coast road, and the airport proximity makes logistics easy if you're flying in with a big quiver bag. The flat, sandy bay gives you room to rig without stress. The wind engine here is the Meltemi, the dominant summer thermal that sweeps down through the Aegean from the north. At Kontari it accelerates along the east-facing coastline and arrives anywhere from side-offshore to cross-shore — that's the detail that demands your full attention before you launch. A genuine side-offshore component means that if things unravel further out, the wind will push you away from the beach rather than back toward it. In practice, the Meltemi is reliable and runs 15–25 knots through the core season; it's consistent rather than wildly gusty, which helps with planning, but the offshore angle is not a spot to dismiss on your first session here. The water is shallow and sandy close in, forgiving for water starts and body-drags. Further out the Aegean opens up. The eastward fetch toward Turkey builds chop when the Meltemi is fully cranked, so flat-water freestyle hunters will need to time it right; on lighter days and in the morning before the thermal properly establishes itself, conditions can be considerably smoother. The season runs June through September, with midsummer typically delivering the most consistent pressure. Intermediate and experienced riders will find it reliable and rewarding; beginners should understand the specifics of offshore conditions before committing, and ideally get a local briefing first.
