About Sarti (Sithonia)

Sarti sits at the southern tip of Sithonia — the middle of Halkidiki's three peninsulas — with the beach facing southeast across the channel toward the monasteries of Mt Athos. It's one of the more striking backdrops you'll rig up against anywhere in Greece, and the spot itself is worth the journey. Getting here takes commitment. From Thessaloniki, plan on around three hours, working south through Sithonia's hill country on roads that get narrower and more scenic as you approach the tip. The drive filters out casual visitors: the windsurfing and kite community has been coming here for years, but the beach doesn't feel crowded. The beach is sandy with crystal-clear water and visibility that lets you see the bottom in detail through the shallows. Entry is clean along the main stretch — sandy underfoot, no nasty surprises on the way in. There are rocks around the headland that you'll want to identify before you rig; keep your launch and landing zone well clear of that side. Past the shallows, the water opens into proper Aegean channel conditions with chop and texture to work with. Wind arrives as the summer Meltemi, running N/NW and hitting the southeast-facing shore side-onshore. It typically builds through June and holds through September, generally in the 12–18 knot range during the main season. The breeze tends to fill in as the day gets going, which gives you time to walk the beach, assess conditions, and rig without rushing. Conditions are forgiving enough for intermediates to build confidence; there's enough going on out in the channel for more experienced riders to stay occupied. The usable wind arc runs from NE through to SW. That gives you real range, but keep track of what's pulling you toward the headland end of the bay — if the angle sits near the edges of that arc, give yourself a larger buffer on the water. Wild camping is permitted near the beach, which makes Sarti a genuine multi-day base if you've come self-sufficient. In the village the options for eating and drinking are solid. Beachside, Beach Bar BelAir and Beach bar Jordan are your go-to spots for a cold drink after a session. For food, Aigaio, Argiris, Pirofani, Osteris, Dallas Soul Food, and the Creperie cover the restaurant side. George's Pub and Paris handle the later part of the evening. The drive from Thessaloniki is long and the road south isn't always quick. But Sarti is the kind of spot that justifies the effort — genuinely remote, genuinely good-looking, with dependable summer wind and water that's worth getting into. If you're touring northern Greece, this one earns its place on the route.
