About Skala Rachoniou (Thassos)

Thassos is the greenest island in the northern Aegean, sitting just a short ferry crossing from the mainland port of Keramoti in East Macedonia and Thrace. Skala Rachoniou is a village on the island's northern shore, and its beach has quietly built a reputation as a solid kitesurf destination—anchored in no small part by the Imperial Hotel, which runs an established kite centre right on the sand. The beach itself is a continuous stretch of sand running about a kilometre, which is enough room to rig and launch without constantly negotiating with sunbathers or other water users. The shoreline faces north, and the wind arc here—spanning from west through north all the way around to east—aligns well with the summer Meltemi. That classic Aegean NE thermal side-shores from the right on this coast, meaning once you're launched and riding, the angle is typically workable rather than awkward. Clean, side-shore wind on a sandy beach is about as close to a friendly setup as you'll find in Greece. Reaching the island is straightforward: ferry from Keramoti (fast crossing) or from Kavala, then coastal road along the north of Thassos to Skala Rachoniou. Parking near the beach is generally easy for a spot of this scale. The Imperial Hotel's presence also means you're not starting from scratch on gear—the kite centre handles tuition and equipment, which takes a lot of the logistics out of a first visit. Conditions vary considerably with the Meltemi's mood. On lighter days the water is flat to lightly chopped and genuinely beginner-friendly; the hotel school and the forgiving sand launch make it a reasonable place to learn. When the Meltemi fills in properly, though, this becomes an intermediate-to-advanced session—the NE wind can push hard, and a side-shore that feels pleasant at 15 knots demands proper downwind awareness at 25-plus. The spot is listed as suitable for all levels, and that's fair, but honest self-assessment matters here. The Meltemi is a summer phenomenon, so July and August are the core window. Shoulder months—late June and early September—can offer the same wind with noticeably fewer people on the beach, which is worth considering if you're planning a dedicated kite trip. After the session, the strip around Skala Rachoniou has solid coverage. Sto Kima and Tavern handle sit-down meals; Γλάρος and Θαλασσινό are your options for proper Greek seafood. For drinks and a debrief, Beach Bar, Chocolate, Place, Planet, Veranda, and Μαϊστράλι are all within reach. It's a tourist village, so the infrastructure is there—restaurants, accommodation, and amenities that make multi-day stays easy without much planning.
