Sekotong Lagoon sits at the far southwest tip of Lombok, a large sheltered bay dotted with small islets — Gili Gede among them — that punctuate the shallows of West Nusa Tenggara. The lagoon faces broadly south-southwest, which aligns it cleanly with the Southeast trade wind that pushes through from May to September, typically running 15–25 knots on good days. That combination of swell shelter, consistent wind direction, and genuinely flat water inside the lagoon makes this one of the more compelling kitesurfing discoveries in Indonesia. Getting here is the first test. Sekotong is remote — a significant journey from central Lombok — and reaching the best sessions means getting into a boat. The reward is access to isolated sandbars scattered across the lagoon that offer a clean, uncluttered launch with flat water all around. There are no facilities out here: no rental shops, no shore services, no safety cover unless you organised it yourself. This is an expedition, not a day trip. The wind arc runs 110°–290°, meaning the SE trade wind finds the lagoon from a favourable angle without significant terrain interference. Inside, the water is genuinely flat — the kind of surface that rewards learning new tricks or just pushing speed. Step out toward the lagoon mouth and the picture changes; swell wraps in from the south and wave riding becomes a real option. It is worth scoping your intended session area before you commit, because the protected interior and the exposed southern edge feel like different spots entirely. The wide wind window is forgiving on direction, but the remoteness is not. A swim, a gear failure, or a medical situation here is serious. This spot is for experienced riders who are comfortable self-rescuing, reading unfamiliar water, and managing their own logistics in the field. Confident intermediates can enjoy the protected flat water inside the lagoon, but they should come with experienced partners and a clear safety plan — not solo. When you get it right, the payoff is real. A strong trade wind day here means an effectively private stretch of flat water, small island silhouettes on every horizon, and the kind of uncrowded session that is increasingly rare in Indonesia. Peak season is May through September. Outside that window the SE trades ease and conditions become unpredictable. Come prepared: carry your own water and food, arrange a trustworthy boat operator who knows the lagoon, bring spares for anything that might break, and never ride alone.
