About Tanjung Aan West Bay

Tanjung Aan West Bay sits at the western arm of the horseshoe-shaped Tanjung Aan bay system on Lombok's southern coast, roughly 15 minutes by road from Kuta Lombok. A promontory separates it from the more exposed eastern bay, angling this side SSW and giving it a sheltered, more manageable character. The result is a calmer, shallower stretch of water that kite schools have quietly adopted as their go-to training ground on this part of the coast. The sand here earns a second look — it carries a faint pink tinge from crushed coral fragments mixed through the white. It's one of the more distinctive beaches on the Lombok south coast, and worth a moment before you start rigging. Wind-wise, West Bay runs on the SE to S trade wind cycle that powers most of southern Lombok from May through September. The flow comes in side-onshore across the bay mouth — a usable kite window spanning 130° through 270° — and typically settles in the 15–22 knot range during peak season. That puts the beach in a reliable sweet spot for side-onshore sessions without the gusty, cross-shore variability you encounter at more exposed spots. The water is what sets West Bay apart. Shallower and noticeably calmer than its eastern neighbour, it makes for a forgiving riding environment. Beginners learning water starts get a genuine advantage here — when you go down, you're usually in manageable water rather than open chop. Kite schools operate sessions here for exactly this reason: the environment works with you rather than against you. That said, don't mistake 'calmer' for 'easy'. The trade wind is still real wind, and 15–22 knots demands proper technique. The side-onshore flow will push you along the bay rather than toward the beach — broadly good for safety, since you're not getting pushed into shore — but understand your downwind picture before you launch and know how much bay you have to work with. Riders chasing bigger challenge — heavier conditions, more open water — typically look to the eastern bay or further along the coast. West Bay is the right call when you're building skills, doing a lesson, or just want a session that's less about surviving the conditions and more about actually riding. There are no listed facilities at the beach. Plan to bring everything — water, sun protection, spare kit. Kuta Lombok is 15 minutes back and has what you need, so sort your supplies before heading out.
