East shore Lago d'Iseo at Marone. MKS Kite School on site. Thermal N (Tivano) mornings, S (Breva) afternoons 14:00–18:00, 14–18 kt. Flat freshwater; intermediate. Best Jun–Sep; protected from northerly gusts by the Monte Guglielmo massif.
Marone sits on the eastern shore of Lago d'Iseo, a narrow Alpine lake tucked into the foothills of the Lombardy pre-Alps about 30 kilometres east of Bergamo. The lake runs roughly north-south between steep wooded hillsides, and that geography is what makes it work for kiteboarding: the Monte Guglielmo massif rises sharply behind the town, channelling the thermal winds that roll through here reliably each summer and sheltering the spot from the worst northerly gusts. The surface is freshwater and flat — glassy or lightly chopped depending on which thermal is running. MKS Kite School operates on site, so there's local knowledge and infrastructure available when you need it, which matters on a spot like this where reading the conditions correctly makes the difference between a great session and a wasted afternoon. Two thermals drive the spot. The Tivano is a northerly that builds in the morning hours; the Breva is a southerly that kicks in during the afternoon, typically from around 14:00 to 18:00, running at roughly 14 to 18 knots. The Breva window is the main event for most kiters here. The wind arc runs from 315° through north and around to 135°, meaning both thermals sit within the usable kite window. That said, freshwater thermals on Alpine lakes can be punchier than they look on paper — they build and fade relatively quickly — so planning your session around the 14:00 Breva start is worth doing rather than wandering down to the water whenever. Skill level reads as intermediate. The flat water is forgiving in surface terms, but the thermal character of the wind — building fast, occasionally gusty near the launch — means you want solid kite control before you go out. This is not the right spot to learn your first water starts. Best season is June through September, with July and August typically delivering the most consistent Breva afternoons. On the water, the flat conditions give you room to work on technique — freestyle, foiling, or blasting laps up and down the lake. Boat and ferry traffic on Lago d'Iseo picks up during summer peak, so staying aware of vessel lanes during the afternoon session matters. After riding, Lido Mad Hops is the closest bar to the water — you'll likely end up there still in your harness. Bar L'espresso, Novecento, Cartapani, and Barbar Marone handle coffee and drinks in the town centre. For a sit-down meal, Alla Galleria, Bar Trattoria Belvedere, and Stop&Go are all nearby options. The town is compact enough that nothing is far on foot from the kite beach. Parking is limited during summer peak, so arriving early — either for the Tivano or ahead of the lunchtime Breva build — gives you more options.
