About Platamona

Platamona is a long sandy beach on the Gulf of Asinara, stretching along Sardinia's northwest coast a short drive from Sassari. The beach faces north, setting up well for the Maestrale — the classic northwest Mediterranean wind that drives this stretch of coastline. When the Maestrale fills in, it arrives onshore, building waves over a sand bottom and giving the whole place an energetic, open-sea feel that's unusual for Sardinia. The beach is wide and long, which means there's generally room to spread out, set up gear, and run a kite without crowding your neighbours. The sand is the launch surface and the bottom stays forgiving underfoot across the whole beach. The usable wind window runs from west-southwest through northwest and north all the way round to east-northeast — a broad arc that captures the Maestrale and most of its variations. The Maestrale comes in onshore here, which means waves. The shorebreak can be punchy, so your launch and landing need to be timed. Getting out through breaking waves requires confidence in your body drag and a quick waterstart once you're through; coming back in, you'll want to ride downwind and commit to a clean landing in the wash. This isn't a beginner beach. Intermediates and above who are comfortable in messy water will find plenty to work with. On the water, you're riding over sand in open swell. The Gulf of Asinara offers some shelter but the beach is exposed enough that the Maestrale builds a proper sea. Wave riding and jumping are both on the menu when there's power behind it — the northwest fetch tends to give the waves shape and rhythm. Be ready for the wind to gust or ease as conditions shift. The shorebreak is the main hazard. A messy landing in the wash can quickly turn into a gear situation, so always have a plan and ideally a land-based second pair of eyes when it's up. The onshore direction works in your favour if you end up in the water — downwind is the beach — but get your self-rescue dialled before you need it. After a session, the beach has a solid cluster of options. Bar La Torre and Titanic are both on hand for a cold drink. For food, Il Pescatore, La Gazzosa Beach, La Riva, and Mediterraneo all cover the restaurant side. It's a well-served stretch for the post-session debrief. Platamona draws a mixed crowd when the Maestrale is running — close enough to Sassari to pull in weekend riders, but the wave conditions keep it honest and reward riders who know what they're doing.
