Valledoria's lagoon sits at the mouth of the Coghinas river on the northern coast of Sardinia, tucked behind the broad sands of Spiaggia di Valledoria. The river delta creates a natural separation between sea and lagoon — a geography that turns what would otherwise be a simple beach into a proper flat-water kite venue. It's one of those spots that rewards you for knowing it exists: most visitors pass without realising what's waiting behind the dunes. The lagoon opens behind the beach, separated from the open sea. That sheltered position defines everything about the riding. Water depth runs from roughly 0.3 to 1 metre — often barely knee-deep — and that shallowness keeps the surface predictably flat and makes the spot far more forgiving than the exposed coast on the other side of the sand. Wind comes in two main characters. The Maestrale (northwest) and Ponente (west) blow side-offshore across the land before reaching the lagoon, delivering clean, consistent pressure on water that stays smooth. These are your best conditions — flat water, reliable pull, minimal chop. The Grecale comes in from the northeast off the open sea, giving a more onshore angle with a bit more surface texture, though the lagoon's natural shelter keeps things manageable. The usable window covers a wide arc from north through south, so there are good riding days across much of the season. That season runs April through October. The combination of reliable Maestrale periods, warm weather, and the lagoon's shallow flat water makes this a spot that genuinely works at every level. Beginners get a low-consequence environment for board starts and basic transitions — if you go over, you're standing in knee-deep water. Intermediate riders can focus on board control without swell complicating everything. Freestyle riders find the flat, consistent surface exactly what they need when working on new moves. Worth noting: the shallowness that makes the lagoon welcoming is the same thing that punishes sloppy landings. Fins and boards pay the price when you're not deliberate about where you set down.
