About Punta Pellaro

Punta Pellaro sits at the very tip of the Italian boot, where mainland Italy makes its closest approach to Sicily across the Strait of Messina. The spot falls within Reggio Calabria province — the southernmost province of the peninsula — and the geography defines the riding experience: a southeast-facing beach with the Strait opening up directly in front of you. The beach is a mix of sand and pebble. Nothing glamorous, but workable for a beach launch, and the water clarity here is genuinely good. The shore faces roughly southeast with a shore normal around 135°, which puts the Strait of Messina directly ahead. The usable wind arc runs 65° to 205°, capturing SE through SSW winds. Southeasterlies come in roughly onshore and typically deliver flatter water close to the launch — good conditions for working on skills or pushing further into the channel. Southwesterly winds arrive at an angle and push chop and small waves down the Strait, adding texture to the ride. Conditions vary with direction: flat to moderate chop covers most of what you will find here, with small waves building on SW days. Getting to Punta Pellaro means heading south from Reggio Calabria city, the nearest hub for supplies and transport connections. The spot itself is a small coastal settlement at the cape. Drive the coast road south from the city and the beach becomes accessible along the shoreline. The season runs April through October. Summer typically brings more consistent conditions driven by sea-breeze patterns along this stretch of Calabrian coast. Spring and autumn can deliver stronger, more weather-driven events. The intermediate-to-advanced rating is earned: the Strait of Messina is not a forgiving body of water. There is real current through the channel, and boat traffic from the busy maritime corridor is a genuine factor out on the water. An upwind issue here has different consequences than at a quiet bay spot — self-rescue skills are not optional, and knowing which way the current is running on the day is basic preparation, not bonus homework. There are no listed facilities at the spot — no kite school, no rental, no structured rescue cover from shore. Arrive self-sufficient with your own gear, safety equipment, and provisions sorted in Reggio Calabria before you head out. The setting itself is hard to argue with. On a clear day — and there are many in the Calabrian summer — Etna is visible across the Strait, making this one of the more atmospheric launch points in southern Italy.
