About Kitesurf Spot Mirnser Klif
Mirnser Klif is a low cliff on the eastern IJsselmeer shore in Gaasterland, Friesland — consistently rated one of the Netherlands' top kitesurf spots. The shallow water stretches up to 600 m offshore at knee-to-hip depth, creating a large, safe riding area with virtually no current and minimal wave action. That combination makes it the go-to beginner spot on the IJsselmeer and a favourite for freestyle training. The safe wind window runs roughly SE to W (135–270°) giving side-onshore or onshore conditions. Southerly winds are particularly steady here due to the long inland fetch. The kite zone is clearly marked by a yellow NKV buoy line along the western boundary; beyond the buoys lies Mokkebank, a 66-hectare bird reserve where kitesurfing is prohibited. Launch from the spacious grass field past the swim zone, or — especially on busy weekends — launch and land in the water to avoid congestion. Note the basalt rip-rap along the eastern shoreline: stay clear in side-shore conditions and always check the water level, which can expose stones in colder months. Facilities are directly on site: Paviljoen 't Mar serves coffee, lunch and dinner with IJsselmeer views; IKO-certified instructor Mink (Learn2kite with Mink) offers private and duo lessons from beginner through advanced level; and Boerderijcamping De Braamberg is a short walk away across the road. Free parking is available at the renovated car park at the top of the klif.
