Malapascua sits at the very northern tip of Cebu island, a small, unhurried place better known for its dive sites than its kite scene — though that is quietly changing. A short boat crossing from the northern Cebu mainland gets you there; once on the island, the north-facing beach is the focal point for a newly established kite operation that has started drawing riders alongside the divers. The shore faces roughly north, and the local riding window runs with the Amihan — the north-east trade wind that blows side-onshore from November through April. Side-onshore is the friendly direction: if a line tangles or a session ends unexpectedly, the drift puts you back on the beach rather than out to sea. The wind arc stretches from west-northwest all the way around through north, north-east, and east — roughly 280° to 100° — so a good Amihan day sits comfortably within the usable window. At low tide the beach opens into a shallow sandy lagoon, which makes this spot work well for learners and intermediates looking for forgiving flat water. The lagoon lets you move without the anxiety of depth underfoot, and a newly established kite school on the island means instruction and likely gear rental are accessible without shipping your own kit. That said, check the tide before you rig: the lagoon character changes with the water level, and what rides like a smooth paddling pool at low tide can behave differently as it fills. Beyond the kiting, Malapascua's main draw is its dive reputation, so the channel and nearby waters see regular boat traffic. Keep an eye on what is moving around you, especially close to the beach and any ferry or dive-boat routes. Facilities on the island are low-key but functional. After a session you have a genuine choice: Bakhaw Kiwi, Cjpei eatery, Haven's Hamburger, Jumbo's Mini-eatery, or Lugaw ni Noah for food; Bar-Ko, Bebot's, Haifisch Bar, Little Mermaid, or Maldito if you want a cold drink on a bar stool. The whole strip has the feel of a dive village that has not yet been overwhelmed by tourism. Malapascua is not a high-performance wave venue or a spot with a long track record in the kite community. It is an island that happens to have the right geography for the Amihan, a new school building local knowledge, and a setting that rewards the traveller willing to combine kite sessions with the kind of unhurried island life that bigger destinations have mostly traded away.
