About Seco Island

Seco Island is a remote sandbar rising barely above the Sulu Sea, sitting roughly 41 kilometres west of Tibiao in Antique province, western Visayas. There is no road, no bridge — reaching it means organising a boat transfer from the Antique coastline, which immediately separates this spot from anything you can stumble onto. That journey is part of the deal, and it keeps the lineup manageable. The island is a low, narrow strip of sand and scattered coral barely above the waterline, with the kind of turquoise shallows and open horizon that photographs almost too well. The sandbanks keep the water flat and relatively shallow across a good stretch of the riding zone, which is exactly what has built Seco's reputation as a top-five kite destination in the Philippines. The wind here is the Amihan — the northeast monsoon that builds across the open Sulu Sea before it reaches the island with a consistency that justifies the trip. The usable wind arc runs from around 10° through 150°, covering a broad northeast-to-southeast window. Depending on where you set up along the island's perimeter, you can find anything from cross-onshore to a clean cross-shore angle. When the Amihan is running well, the wind tends to be steady rather than gusty, which gives you predictable pop — important if you are working on technique. For riding style, this is a freestyle and big-air spot. The flat-water section and consistent Amihan make it well-suited to unhooked tricks and advanced riding. Intermediates can certainly enjoy the conditions, but the combination of remoteness and shallow coral-studded water means you want solid self-rescue skills before you come here. There are no confirmed facilities on the island. No rental gear, no confirmed rescue cover, no verified shops or services. Come fully self-sufficient: bring your own kit, a comprehensive repair bag, and treat every session as a boat-dependent operation. Confirm your return pickup before you unhook for the first time — the isolation is the appeal, but it demands more planning than a mainland beach launch. The shallow water that gives you that flat riding also warrants care on launch and landing. Coral and uneven sand structures underfoot can surprise you; pick your entry and exit points deliberately rather than drifting wherever the kite takes you. Getting to Antique typically involves flying into Caticlan or Iloilo and transferring overland to the coast, then organising the boat leg out to the island. Budget a full day for logistics each direction. It is not a casual day trip — but when the Amihan is on and the sandbar is yours, the riding earns back every hour of travel.
