About Alvor Lagoon

Alvor Lagoon sits on Portugal's western Algarve coast, where a tidal estuary opens toward the Atlantic. The lagoon's shallow, protected waters draw kiters who want a flatter riding surface without the full ocean swell — it's a different kind of session from the open beach spots along this coastline. Access is from the Alvor waterfront, where the sandy shoreline provides the launch. Tidal state matters here: at lower tide the lagoon opens up considerably and gives you more usable water; at higher tide the depth and available space changes. Check the tide tables before you show up — it affects both where you can launch and how much room you have to work with. The wind arc spans 135° to 315°, covering southeast through south, southwest, west, and northwest. SE, SW, and NW are the most productive directions, aligning with the thermal patterns typical along this part of the Algarve. When the wind is properly established, the lagoon offers a steady side or side-onshore flow across the flats. The estuary geometry can channel wind differently across sections of the lagoon, so watch how conditions evolve through your session rather than assuming they stay constant from launch to finish. In lighter conditions the lagoon can feel glassy and almost perfectly flat — the kind of session where you can work on technique without fighting the water. The flat, shallow water makes Alvor Lagoon a sensible choice for intermediates working on their consistency — the sandy bottom is forgiving for falls, and there's no open-ocean swell to deal with. On stronger days the lagoon builds a reasonable chop across the flats. Tidal sandbanks toward the edges of the estuary can catch you out if you drift without tracking your position, so know where the shallows are before you launch. Two kite schools operate near the spot: Algarve Kitesurf School and Alvor Kitesurf Center. Both are useful for current conditions intel, equipment rental, and lessons. Alvor Kitesurf Center also runs a guesthouse. Bar Quim is the nearest food and drink option to the water. For a sit-down meal, A Ribeira Alvor is a restaurant option in the area. Wind tends to be most reliable during the warmer months when the Algarve's thermal cycle is active.
