About Carrapateira

Carrapateira — or more precisely Praia da Bordeira — sits on Portugal's most exposed stretch of Atlantic coastline, where the Algarve's cliff-tops give way to open ocean at the country's southwest corner. This is not a resort beach. No beach bars, no flat-water lagoon, no kite school setting up flags in the shallows. Just a wide, wild sand beach backed by towering dunes, with Atlantic swells rolling in unobstructed from open ocean. The approach runs through the village of Carrapateira and out to the coast along quiet roads. The beach is broad and sandy at the launch zone, though rocks sit along the flanks — take a few minutes to walk the area before you rig. The dunes behind the beach provide useful shelter for setting up, shielded from the full force of whatever is coming off the water. The dominant wind here is the Nortada, a northwesterly that picks up reliably along this exposed coast. At Bordeira it delivers cross-onshore wind in the 18-25 kt range during the prime season, pushing organised Atlantic swell directly into the bay. Those waves can reach 3 metres — stacked, powerful and consistent in the right conditions. The cross-onshore angle gives you working room on the wave face without being instantly flushed onshore, but that comfort is relative. This is serious, open-ocean wave riding. Skill level matters here more than at most spots. The combination of substantial wave height, powerful swell, rocks on the beach edges and physical remoteness makes Carrapateira territory for experienced riders who know how to read sets, stay in control in breaking waves and manage a self-rescue without relying on someone onshore. Beginners should look elsewhere — this is not a learning spot, and conditions do not invite improvisation. Best season is October through March. The Nortada runs at manageable levels across those months, delivering quality wave sessions without the extremes that summer brings. Summer Nortada can push well above 30 knots — workable on small kit if you are comfortable in overpowered conditions, but that is a different beach entirely. The sandy bottom is forgiving underfoot, and the dunes give you room to regroup between sessions. The village has accommodation options within reach: Carrapateira Lodge, CarrapateiraMar Guesthouse, Casa da Estela, Casa da Horta Guesthouse, Casa Luminosa and Casa Presente Guesthouse cover a range of small-scale places. Camping is also nearby for those who prefer it. For food, Bamboo, Cabrita, Alecrim - cozy Terrace and Casa Presente Morning Bistro are all village options. None of this is resort infrastructure — it is a quiet, small place, and that suits what Bordeira is.
