About Meia Praia

Meia Praia is a long, open Atlantic beach sitting roughly 4 km east of Lagos on the Algarve's southern coast. The name means 'half beach', but there's nothing diminished about the riding here. It stretches wide and flat — a sandy bottom that runs clean into the bay with no reef and no rocky surprises underfoot. The water character tends toward the flat side, especially when the dominant thermal wind is running from its typical side-offshore angle. Getting in is straightforward. Take the EN-125 east out of Lagos, follow the signs down toward Meia Praia, and you'll find access roads leading to beach parking. In peak summer, that parking fills — arriving early gives you your pick of the spot. The beach itself is exposed, with limited natural shade, so bring your own cover if you're sitting out a long session. The wind here is driven by the Nortada, a N/NNW thermal that arrives side-offshore from the left. When it's running, it typically sits in the 18–25 knot range — enough to have a proper session, not so wild it demands you be a hero. That side-offshore angle does real work: it flattens the water inside the bay, suppresses the chop that Atlantic exposure would otherwise deliver, and creates the kind of fast, clean conditions that make the place worth the trip. The usable kite window spans from around 120° to 280°, giving you a reasonable range of directions to work with. For beginner riders, lighter wind sessions here can be a good call — the sandy bottom is forgiving if things go wrong, and the side-offshore angle means a dropped kite tends to drift toward water rather than dragging you up the beach. That said, side-offshore is always a one-way door if the wind drops: no power means no water relaunch, and you're either self-rescuing or swimming to shore. Never solo, always have a plan. For intermediates, the flat-ish water is solid ground for working on transitions and speed runs, and when the Nortada is pumping at the top of its range, it's a genuine workout. Facilities directly on the beach are limited — this isn't a service-heavy spot with rows of rentals and kite schools lining the dunes. Nearby though, you'll find a decent range of food and drink: A Barrigada, A Matilde, Adega da Marina, and Berlim cover sit-down meals; BAGGA, Bahia, Beach bar Linda, Bora Café, Britaica, and Bar Quim round out the café and bar options. Between sessions, there are choices. Meia Praia is a workhorse spot. No frills, no drama — just consistent thermal wind, manageable water, and a beach bottom that won't punish you for a mistake. Show up prepared and it delivers.
