About Ria de Alvor

Ria de Alvor sits at the western end of the Algarve, a sheltered tidal lagoon wedged between the fishing village of Alvor and the outskirts of Lagos. You won't find it by following signs — the access is a roughly 600-metre dirt track beside the fishers' warehouses, easily missed if you don't know what you're looking for. Follow it to the end and the lagoon opens up: wide, shallow, and calm in a way that's rare on this stretch of the Portuguese coast. The floor is sandy throughout, and at low tide around 80% of the lagoon sits at waist depth or less. That's what makes this place the standout beginner spot in the Algarve. There's no swell to battle, no abrupt ledges to worry about, and the shallows mean you can stand up, sort your lines, and walk yourself downwind without drama. When something goes sideways — and in the learning stages, things go sideways — the consequences here are far more forgiving than on an ocean beach. Wind is the Nortada thermal, a northerly that builds reliably from March through October and typically delivers 16–22 knots. The usable kite window runs from 190° through 350°, giving a wide arc that covers the lagoon cleanly. Because the surrounding land shelters the water, the breeze tends to arrive smoother and more consistent than at an exposed coastal site — less turbulent, easier for learners to read and respond to. Tide timing shapes the session. High to falling tide is the sweet spot: the lagoon is full, you have depth to manoeuvre in, and the gradually lowering water keeps conditions predictable. At very low tide the rideable area tightens and some sections go too thin for comfortable riding — it's worth checking the tide table before you drive out. Two schools operate in the area — Algarve Kite Center and Algarve Kitesurf School — so beginners and visitors needing rental kit have options without driving far. Experienced riders will find the flat water well-suited to board progression and foil work; if it's waves or big air you're chasing, other spots along the Algarve coast will serve you better. Alvor village is close enough to walk to after a session. Adega d'Alvor is around 366 metres from the spot, A Ribeira Alvor a little further at around 693 metres, and 38 1/2 — a bar and café — sits at under 400 metres for a quicker coffee stop. For accommodation, Alvor Ardemar and Alvor House Lagoon are both within a kilometre of the water. One honest note: the access track is unsealed dirt. Easy enough in a standard car under normal conditions, but worth bearing in mind if it has been raining.
