About Misty Cliffs / Scarborough

Misty Cliffs sits on the Cape Peninsula's Atlantic-facing coastline, tucked just south of the village of Scarborough in the Western Cape. The name is earned — this stretch of coast can be wrapped in marine layer when the South Atlantic is doing its thing, but on a clean day with the right wind in it, you're looking at some of the most serious wave-kiting the Peninsula has to offer. Getting there takes you along the coastal road hugging the peninsula's western edge. It's a scenic drive, but the approach deserves your attention and so will the conditions once you arrive. The beach is raw, Atlantic-exposed coastline, and the vibe is remote even though you're not far from Cape Town. Come prepared — this is not a spot that forgives you for being underprepared. The riding area has rocky hazards on both sides. That's not a detail to skim over. Before you unroll your kite, walk the beach, identify your clean launch window, and plan your landing before you need it. There's no margin for a distracted setup here. Pick your spot, commit to it, and know your exit. Wind is the good news. Misty Cliffs catches SE, S, SW and NW — a wide enough window that you can find sessions across a solid chunk of the calendar. The prevailing Cape summer SE is what most riders here during the October–March season will encounter, but the spot works in several orientations. That said, the Cape Peninsula is the Cape Peninsula — transitions, gusts and unexpected lulls are part of the deal. Stay switched on after launch, not just before it. The water is the real feature. Big, powerful Atlantic swell arrives here with full oceanic fetch behind it. These are heavy, serious waves — not the place to find your wave-riding legs, but an exceptional venue if you already have them. The ocean makes no allowances for hesitation. If your kite control isn't yet fully automatic in surf, give yourself more sessions somewhere more forgiving before committing here. Skill level: this is intermediate at the absolute floor, and the spot genuinely suits experienced wave kiters. Know your self-rescue cold. Know how to handle yourself with rocky hazards on both sides and powerful surf in front. Come with someone who can spot from the beach. Facilities at Misty Cliffs are minimal — there's no kite school, no gear rental, and no organised rescue cover. Sort your kit before the drive out, bring a buddy, and have a plan for if things go sideways. The peak season runs October to March, the Southern Hemisphere summer, when the Cape Peninsula is at its most consistent for both wind and swell. Outside that window conditions become more variable. On the right day, in that window, with the right background — this place is exceptional. Raw, powerful and worth every bit of the preparation it asks of you.
