About Strand

Strand sits on the eastern shore of False Bay, a wide, south-facing beach that catches the southeasterly wind funnelling up through the bay from October through March. It's one of the more accessible kite spots in the Western Cape — the beachfront is easy to find, parking runs alongside the beach, and the setup area is open and uncluttered. If you're driving from Cape Town, you're looking at a straightforward route with no technical approach to worry about. The wind here arrives from the south and southeast — the usable kite window runs 180° to 359° — and when it fires, it fires properly. Through the peak season you're typically looking at 15 to 30 knots of consistent SE. It's not a guaranteed-every-day spot, but the reliability through those months is genuinely good. The water is a mix of flat sections and small chop; it's not a heavy shore break or a reef situation, just open bay water that behaves predictably in most conditions. For intermediates, this is a comfortable stretch of beach. The wind is honest, the launch is uncomplicated, and the water doesn't throw nasty surprises at you. Advanced riders will find it a solid session rather than a bucket-list destination — it's the kind of place you come back to because it works, not because it humbles you. One thing worth planning ahead: the downwind run toward Gordon's Bay is a real option here, and the geography sets it up well. If you can organise a shuttle, a downwinder along this stretch of False Bay makes for a proper session. Sort the logistics before you rig rather than after. Keep an eye on drift. With SE wind pushing you into the bay, a lost kite or a bad tack can put you further out than you'd like. The beach is wide enough for self-landing in most conditions, but scout the full stretch first and know your exit options before you commit. Facilities are well covered.
