About Bozburun (Marmaris)

Bozburun sits at the tip of the Marmaris peninsula in southwestern Turkey, tucked into a narrow, deep inlet that opens to the northeast. The village is primarily known as a sailing hub — traditional gulets anchor in the bay and wooden boat builders still work the yards along the waterfront — but the same geography that shelters those boats channels the summer thermal wind into something kiters can work with. The usable wind arc runs from 315° through to 135°, which means the spot favours winds from the northwest quadrant funnelling down through the peninsula. June through September, the thermal Imbat typically kicks in during the afternoons, building to somewhere in the 10–18 knot range. It is not a guarantee every day, but on a good summer afternoon it comes in steadily, and the flat protected water inside the inlet makes for a manageable session — particularly for intermediates building confidence without open-sea conditions to deal with. The launching beach is limited. This is not a long sandy stretch; it is a small patch, and on a busy summer day it fills up early. Get there before noon if you want a comfortable setup area. Rigging in a hurry with limited space is not ideal anywhere, and less so here. The surrounding landscape is dramatic — rugged hillsides and pine-covered slopes dropping to the water — but the inlet itself stays calm enough that heavy chop is not typically part of the picture. What to expect on the water: flat, protected conditions when the Imbat is running. The geometry of the inlet keeps things manageable. The wind is thermal, so expect a gradual build through the afternoon rather than an early-morning blast. Morning sessions are typically very light; patience until the thermal develops is part of the routine. When it does fill in, it tends to be consistent and directionally stable through the kite window. Facilities in Bozburun are village-scale. İlios Otel ve Restaurant Bozburun sits roughly 800 metres from the launch area — the closest accommodation option and a reasonable post-session stop. Buena Vista Restaurant & Hotel Bozburun is around 1.6 km out and offers both rooms and food. For a coffee or a drink, Gul is a nearby bar and café. Local restaurants concentrate in the village: Bozburun restaurant, Fita Bozburun, Lokum Manti Evi, and Bafra Pide ve Lahmacun Bozburun are all within roughly 1.8 km of the water. Akvarium and Anatolia are a bit further out. Do not expect a kite school or equipment hire in the village — Bozburun is a quiet backwater, and you will want to arrive self-sufficient with your own gear. Getting here means driving the winding road along the Marmaris peninsula; the approach is scenic but takes time. The town is small enough that the waterfront is easy to find once you arrive. Best suited for intermediate and above riders travelling with their own kit, and anyone who values a calm, uncrowded inlet session over a high-wind beach scene.
