About Nanou Beach (Symi)

Nanou Beach sits in a northwest-facing pebble bay on the island of Symi, part of the Dodecanese group in the South Aegean. There are no roads and no paths in — the only access is by water. You arrange a boat from Symi's harbour, the skipper drops you at the beach, and you agree a time for the return run. That logistical barrier is the price of admission, but it's also why the bay stays quiet: no casual day-trippers, no competition for the water. The wind driving the spot is the Meltemi, the northwest summer wind that defines the Aegean's season. At Nanou, the northwest-facing orientation means the Meltemi arrives side-onshore — a workable angle that loads the kite cleanly without pushing you straight back onto the pebbles. The usable kite window spans 220° to 40°, a generous arc that covers the core Meltemi direction and accommodates the minor oscillations typical through a summer session. The beach surface is pebble throughout. Launches are doable but reward care — booties will make waterline entries and exits significantly more comfortable, and a measured approach beats a rushed scramble when you're coming in to land on stones. Once you're clear of the shore, the water is crystalline Aegean: visibility is excellent and the bay sees little through-traffic. Those conditions translate well to kite foiling. The water quality, combined with the clean side-onshore Meltemi and the absence of crowding, makes this a genuine foiling destination rather than just a spot where foiling happens to be possible. There are zero facilities here. No café, no toilet, no hire, no first aid. You are completely responsible for what you arrive with — water, food, any kit spares you might need, and a charged phone. Before departing, lock in your pick-up: a specific time, a contact number for your skipper, and a buffer so a slow pack-down on a pebble beach doesn't become a problem. This is a spot for riders who can manage an independent session. The boat logistics and absence of any backup mean it's not appropriate for early intermediates — if something goes wrong, help is not close. For experienced kiters and foilers comfortable working without a safety net, Nanou delivers genuinely clean conditions in an unspoilt setting: the kind of session that's increasingly hard to arrange as the Aegean's more accessible spots fill up through summer.
