About Hayling Island

Hayling Island sits at the mouth of Chichester Harbour on Hampshire's south coast, a tidal island connected to the mainland by road bridge. The main kite beach faces south across the Solent, with the West Winner sandbar stretching roughly a kilometre offshore — a shifting tongue of sand that drops to waist depth at low tide and delivers as close to flat water as England's south coast gets. Access is straightforward: drive down the island to the south shore and park at the west carpark. From the carpark corner there's a free public beach that anyone can use for rigging and launching. The adjacent main beach is private, operated by the Hayling Island Kitesurf Association (HKA) — membership gets you a more organised launch area and is worth picking up if you plan to return regularly. CBK Hayling Island Kitesurf School, Club & Shop is on hand for tuition, gear hire, and local knowledge if you're new to the spot. Shore normal runs roughly south-southeast (around 170°), which makes SW and W winds the bread-and-butter conditions here — they arrive cross-onshore and push across the sandbar, giving you a clean, wide usable window. SE comes in more cross-onshore and tends to kick up a small chop or short wave on the bar. The full usable arc runs from E through to WSW (90°–250°), so the spot handles a wide spread of directions, though anything close to due south means reading the downwind picture carefully before you commit. At low tide the West Winner sandbar is the star: a kilometre of knee-to-waist-deep water where you can ride and crash without depth penalty. High tide swallows it, so timing your session around the tidal window is standard local practice — Portsmouth tide tables are your friend. Water temperature sits between 10–15°C year-round, which means a 4/3mm wetsuit handles spring through autumn comfortably; add 5mm gloves and boots in winter. Hayling runs year-round. Summer tends toward lighter, more variable conditions; autumn and winter typically deliver more consistent southwesterly pressure as Atlantic systems push up the Channel. When a solid westerly or southwesterly arrives, this is one of the more reliable spots in the region. After your session, Bar 18 and Cafe Boho cover the post-ride drink, while Agaligo, Bay of Bengal, Chichester Restaurant, Dolphin, and Beast Feast Pizza handle food in different directions. Cockle Warren Cottage Hotel is worth knowing if you're making a weekend of it.
