West Wittering sits at the mouth of Chichester Harbour on the West Sussex coast — a wide, sandy beach that faces roughly south-southwest into the English Channel. This is one of southern England's established kite spots: a designated launch zone, easy access from a large car park, and a mix of flat harbour water and small Channel waves that gives riders something to work with regardless of level. The setting is coastal without being remote, which keeps the logistics manageable. The designated kite launch area sits near the main car park, which means rigging and getting to the water is straightforward. You're not humping kit across a wide beach or improvising on an unmanaged stretch of sand — the zone is organised. Summer weekends, particularly on any day when the forecast is promising, will fill that car park early. If you're making the drive from inland, getting there ahead of the main rush is simply sensible. The usable kite window runs from 125° to 275°, covering southeast through southwest to west. Southwest is the direction the spot is designed for: the shore faces SSW, so a SW wind arrives cross-onshore from the right — clean, consistent power with a rescue angle that keeps options open and a launch that doesn't need a ground crew. It's the forecast that makes West Wittering worth the trip. South goes onshore; it's workable, but downwind drift becomes an active concern rather than a background one, and self-launching gets harder. West goes cross-offshore, which experienced riders who know the spot can manage, but that's not the setup for learning or for a relaxed session. Water character shifts with the tide and the swell direction. The harbour mouth brings flat water into the equation, while small Channel chop adds texture when the swell is running. On a good SW day you'll find both — enough variation to keep freestylers interested while beginners find cleaner water in the flatter sections. The spot works for all levels when conditions are right, and the wind direction is the controlling variable, more so than skill level. Post-session, the options around the beach are solid. Drift-In Surf Café and Hammetts Kitchen are your quick-stop food and coffee. Drifters and Dom step it up for a proper sit-down meal. Rosario's, Madhu Ban Tandoori Restaurant, and New Lee Raj add variety for something different in the evening, and Calamitys takes care of the end-of-day drink. If you're making a full weekend of it rather than a day trip, Scott's Farm Camping Site and Snow Hill Caravan Site provide the overnight options.
