About My Hoa Lagoon

My Hoa Lagoon sits on Vietnam's southern coast, in Ninh Thuận province roughly 20 kilometres north of Phan Rang. The spot is a shallow, flat-water lagoon protected by a reef sitting about 700 metres offshore — that reef does most of the work in damping swell, and the result is a calm, glassy interior even when the trade wind is running hard. From October through March, the NNE Amihan trades deliver a cross-onshore flow that typically runs 15–40 knots. The usable wind arc stretches from 50° through to 190°, covering a wide NNE-to-south band, and the lagoon sits right inside that window. Lighter days in the 15–20 knot range make for relaxed freeride sessions; push toward the 30–40 end and things get serious — be honest with your kite selection before you rig. The shallow, flat water makes this genuinely accessible across skill levels. Beginners can work on upwind riding without the intimidation of choppy open water; intermediates will find transitions more forgiving here than on exposed beaches. More experienced riders can use the space for flat-water freestyle. The cross-onshore angle gives you some natural drift toward shore if you drop a kite, but you'll still want confident water-starting before pushing distance — the lagoon is wide and parts of it are very shallow. Getting there: head north from Phan Rang along the coast and the lagoon is roughly 20 kilometres out. Access is from the lagoon's edge. Phi Kite School operates at the spot and runs a restaurant alongside, so instruction and a post-session meal are both covered on-site. Vietnam Surf Camping provides accommodation nearby — useful if you want to base yourself here and chase the wind properly rather than commuting. Best season is firmly October to March when the Amihan is consistent. Outside those months the wind drops away and the lagoon is largely flat. Within the season, gauge your kite size to the day — the 15–40 knot range demands a proper quiver if you're spending time here. The reef protection holds the water state flat regardless of wind strength, which is a meaningful advantage over exposed beach launches in the region. One practical note: the lagoon is shallow throughout, and unexpected shallow sections can catch you off guard when you're riding a new line for the first time. Take a slow first run to read the bottom before you open up. The reef about 700 metres offshore marks the outer edge of the protected zone — stay inside it and you're riding in clean, flat water. A quietly consistent spot with real infrastructure and conditions that work for riders at every level.
