Vatses Beach sits in a remote southwest-facing bay on Astypalaia, one of the more isolated islands in the South Aegean. Astypalaia has a distinctive butterfly shape, and Vatses tucks into the western wing, well away from the island's main settlements. Getting here takes real commitment — the approach is not straightforward and this is a spot that rewards those who've done the legwork. The beach is sandy with shallow water extending from shore, which creates a forgiving launch zone and gives riders room to breathe in lighter conditions. When it stays light, the spot is genuinely approachable. When the Meltemi fills in, that changes. The Meltemi is the dominant wind throughout the Aegean, blowing from the northwest. At Vatses, the island's terrain means it crosses the land mass and arrives at this southwest-facing bay roughly side-on — which keeps the water choppier than a clean cross-shore setup would produce, but also means the kite window stays workable across a wide arc from SSW through northwest to NNE (190°–10°). On stronger Meltemi days the bay can get properly powered and the shallow water turns lumpy. That's where the advanced-rider caveat applies: when it's nuking here, you need solid kite control and the ability to self-rescue without hesitation. The biggest practical reality of Vatses is its remoteness. There are no facilities at the beach — no rental shops, no cafés, no restrooms, no rescue services. Bring everything: water, food, a pump, spare lines, and ideally a riding partner. Self-sufficiency is not optional; it's the price of having a sandy bay nearly to yourself. That rarely-crowded character is genuinely unusual for Greek island kitesurfing, where accessible spots fill up quickly when the wind is on. Vatses, because of the approach, tends to draw only committed riders who've done the research. The vibe is calm, the water uncrowded. Launch from the sand — the beach gives you room to lay out a kite without drama. The shallow gradient lets you walk well out before you're waist-deep, useful for self-launching or body-dragging clear of any shore break. Given the island's influence on the Meltemi, wind direction at the bay can differ slightly from what the forecast shows — set up, check your drift, and confirm the angle before committing.
