About Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three Gili Islands, sitting off the northwest coast of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara. It's a car-free island — you arrive by boat, there are no vehicles, and that unhurried pace extends to the whole vibe of the place. Don't let it fool you into thinking the water is equally laid-back. The kite spot is at the southern tip of the island, close to Villa Ombak: a south-facing stretch of beach that opens into the channel between the Gili Islands. From May through September, SE to SSE trade winds — sitting between 130° and 155° — come through side-onshore at 12–20 knots. The usable kite window here spans 110° to 250°, so the dominant southeasterly trades sit well within it. On a clean trade-wind day the airflow is steady and predictable, and the riding can be excellent. The catch — and it's a serious one — is tidal currents. The channel between the islands sees strong north–south flows during tidal exchange, and outside of slack tide those currents make kiteboarding impractical or outright unsafe. You can't pick your window based on wind alone here; you need to cross-reference tide tables and know when slack water falls. A strong current running against you mid-session, mid-downwind, is not a situation you want to engineer. The second hazard is the shallow coral zone at the southern tip. A downwind crash or dragged landing isn't just inconvenient — coral is unforgiving. Booties are a sensible precaution, and running through your body-drag recovery in clear, shallow water before committing to a full session is smart practice, not optional. This is a spot for experienced riders. Tidal timing, coral awareness, and solid self-rescue skills are the price of entry — not suggestions.
