Kite Beach sits on the western shore of Gili Air, a small car-free island in Indonesia's Lombok Strait. The beach stays quiet even during the wind season, and the easy pace of the island tends to seep into your sessions. The spot faces southwest into the Strait, with a usable wind window running from south-southwest around to north: roughly 205° to 5°. Two distinct patterns drive it. The northwest monsoon runs October through March, delivering 12–20 knots from the northwest (290–330°), and this is typically the most reliable period for the spot. Outside that window, the southeast trade wind — sitting around 135° — can still come through as a side-onshore option, making shoulder months worth checking if you're on the island anyway. The water in front of the beach is shallow with a sandy bottom, which keeps conditions forgiving. Wipeouts close in are low-consequence, and the flat inshore water suits learners and riders working on technique. That shallowness also means you'll walk your kit out some distance before the water is deep enough to ride properly — launching in lighter winds takes patience and a longer walk than you might expect. Further out into the Strait, the flat water gives way to chop and the riding gets more dynamic. Experienced riders can use the inshore flat sections for drills and tricks before pushing out when conditions build. Learners and intermediates will find the combination of forgiving bottom and consistent monsoon winds genuinely useful for building confidence. The wind window is wide — covering most of the westerly quadrant — which means the spot stays usable across a good range of conditions rather than being overly direction-sensitive. Getting here means a fast boat from Lombok or Bali — there's no road to Gili Air. Once on the island, everything is on foot and nothing is far.
