About Gallipoli – Baia Verde

Gallipoli – Baia Verde sits on the Ionian coast of Apulia, a broad white-sand beach about 3 km south of Gallipoli town centre. It faces west into shallow, turquoise water — the kind that makes you forget you're here to kite. Getting there is uncomplicated: road-side parking runs alongside the beach, so you're rigging within metres of the water's edge. The usable kite window runs from southeast (135°) through northwest (315°), which means Baia Verde handles two of the Mediterranean's most consistent wind engines. The Maestrale comes in from the northwest, side-shore from your right when facing the water. The Scirocco arrives from the south, running side-onshore from below — a gentler angle that nudges you toward shore rather than away from it. Both directions are workable for most riders, and the broad arc means fewer dead angles than at more constrained spots. The water character is forgiving. In Maestrale it typically runs flat to lightly choppy over the shallows. Scirocco sessions can build a small wave, but conditions rarely turn wild. This makes Baia Verde a reliable freeride location across a wide skill range — intermediates will find the Scirocco angle manageable, while Maestrale days tend to be more dynamic. Winter is a different story: Maestrale storms can push waves up to 2 m, and those sessions are strictly for experienced riders who know exactly what they're doing. Summer brings the crowds. May through September is peak season, and beach restrictions can limit launch options when the sand fills up. Early mornings or shoulder-season days — May and September especially — give you space to rig properly without navigating a gauntlet of sunbathers. The spot is year-round capable, but the shoulder months are the sweet spot for most riders. Gallipoli's old town is 3 km up the road — worth the drive for dinner after a long session on the water. Baia Verde is an honest freeride spot: easy road access, forgiving water, a broad wind window, and enough local infrastructure to make a stay comfortable. Respect the summer crowd reality, treat winter storms with the seriousness they deserve, and it'll deliver.
