Porto Cesareo Lagoon sits on Apulia's Ionian coastline near Lecce — a shallow, crystalline body of water that opens west toward open sea. The spot has earned a strong reputation as one of southern Italy's more accessible kite venues: flat water, reliable wind, and a setting that suits everything from first-timer body drags to proper freestyle sessions. Getting there is straightforward from the coastal road, and parking is available along the seafront, though it tightens considerably in July and August when the town fills with Italian summer holidaymakers. Arrive early in high season — spots by the waterfront go fast. The main kite zone faces west-southwest across the lagoon. At its best, the launch is wide enough to rig comfortably, but some sections narrow noticeably, so walk the shore before committing to a spot. The water is shallow throughout — a real confidence-builder for riders still working out their water-start, and genuinely useful for self-rescue. Wind is dominated by the Scirocco, a southeast wind that arrives side-onshore across the lagoon at 12–30 knots. The usable kite window runs from 135° to 315°, which covers the Scirocco nicely. Northwest winds — the Maestrale — fall outside that arc and push offshore, so if the forecast is running strong NW, this is not the day to be here. The water character is the headline: the lagoon is shallow and flat, and swell from the Ionian stays small. Beginners and freestylers both benefit — beginners because a wipeout rarely means a long swim, freestylers because a consistent, chop-free surface gives cleaner pop. Intermediates will appreciate the side-onshore angle, which makes it easy to run downwind without constantly fighting back up. Two things to manage: summer crowds and coast-guard restrictions. High season brings more bodies on the water and periodic enforcement of designated kite zones and exclusion areas near swimmers. Follow local signage and any instructions from the coast guard on the day — conditions and enforcement vary. If the main spot is overrun, Punta Prosciutto and Torre Lapillo are both nearby alternatives worth knowing. After a session, the village has you covered.
