Tucked into the coastline of West Sumbawa Regency, Sekongkang Lagoon is one of those spots that feels like a genuine discovery. The lagoon stretches roughly 8 kilometres long and 200 metres wide, carved behind a protective reef system, and on most days you will have the entire thing to yourself. Getting here takes commitment. From Lakey Peak — the most common base for kite travellers in Sumbawa — you are looking at around three hours by road. The journey cuts through remote West Nusa Tenggara, so plan transport in advance and come self-sufficient. There is no kite shop or rental infrastructure at the lagoon itself. The wind is the SE trade wind, blowing side-shore across the lagoon on an arc from roughly southeast through to west (125°–275°). It runs April through November, typically delivering 12–24 knots — a genuine range from lighter sessions where a bigger kite earns its keep to properly powered afternoons. Because the lagoon is oriented to catch the trades cleanly, you get consistent side-shore pressure without the gusty surprises that plague spots hemmed in by hills or dense vegetation. Tides run this spot. The tidal range is 2.5 metres, and the lagoon is only workable from mid-tide up. At low water the flats can expose enough to make launching impractical. Check the tide table before you leave your accommodation — arriving at low tide means a long wait on shore with nothing to do about it. The water inside the lagoon is flat, which makes it excellent for freestyle, freeride, and working on technique without chop fighting you. The 200-metre width gives you room to run upwind-downwind laps without constant tacking. If you want more of a challenge, reef breaks and channel waves sit outside the protected water — a different discipline entirely, but there if you want it. Hazards are what you would expect from a reef-backed tropical lagoon. The reef is present and demands awareness when you push toward the edges or drift outside the flat water zone. With no rescue infrastructure on site, self-sufficiency is not optional. Respect the tidal window and do not let sessions drift toward low water. For accommodation and food, the Naia resort is nearby and serves as a practical base. Beyond that, services in the immediate area are limited. What makes Sekongkang Lagoon worth the detour is uncomplicated: eight kilometres of flat water, a dependable trade wind blowing side-shore for most of the dry season, and almost nobody else riding. If you are routing through Sumbawa between April and November and the Lakey Peak crowd scene has worn thin, this is the kind of place that resets your entire outlook on what kiting can feel like.
